Strongly mineral nose. Very fresh and sappy. Good integrity of fruit right through the beginning, middle and end of the tasting experience. Lots of tannin there still which is very slightly dusty. Correct St-Estèphe. Sweet start and then glossy.

Jean-Marc Quarin June - 1999

Intense. Brilliant. Clean. Discreet. Fresh. Fruity. Quite complex. Smoky. A little animal. Once again the entry in the mouth is enveloped and develops very caressing, juicy. The wine melts in the mouth in a very beautiful texture and the pleasure is there. For my part, with such an attack, I would like a little more structure after the mid-palate. However, the wine finishes long and on the aromas. Wait for it to meld. Structured wine without its discreet aspect.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Now at 20 years of age there is fine delineation on the nose with more detail than the 1986 tasted alongside. The oak is a little more present here (50% in this vintage) married with plenty of redcurrant, cedar, loam and undergrowth aromas. These aromatics can develop further. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry, perhaps one of the most youthful and backward of the 1996s that I tasted during my visits. It feels firm in the mouth, masculine, very Saint Estèphe.

Better on the nose, with its secondary tobacco, cedar, underbrush, herb, and bright red berry nose, than on the medium-bodied, firm, lean, tannic, crunchy, crisp palate.

Château Calon Segur
Château Calon Segur

Château Calon-Ségur is a 94-hectare wine estate located in Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde. Third Grand Cru Classé (official 1855 Médoc wine classification) of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the grand vin is often recognisable by its label. The estate's grape varieties consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc with vines averaging 40 years of age. Calon-Ségur wine is generally considered one of the most powerful and full-bodied wines of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The estate also produces a second wine, Marquis de Calon Segur, and a Cru Bourgeois, Capbern Gasqueton. The best vintages of Château Calon-Ségur are 1982, 1988, the 1995 vintage as well as the 1996 wines and the 2000 vintage. Finally, the 2003 vintage, 2005, 2009 wines, 2010 and 2014 are excellent.
