(2-1997) In the new classification of St.-Émilion, justice was certainly served with the elevation of Angélus to premier grand cru classé status. No Bordeaux estate has been making as concentrated and consistently high quality wines as has Angélus since 1988. Even in the rain-plagued vintage of 1992, Angélus produced a wine of uncommon power, ripeness, and intensity. This estate is in many ways symbolic of what heights Bordeaux can achieve when a property is managed by someone as passionate and driven as Hubert de Bouard. As I have been writing for the last decade, these are wines to buy at first release; they can only go up in price given their quality. Another inky, purple black-coloured wine, the 1994 offers up heavenly scents of smoked meats, barbecue spices, hickory wood, and plenty of cassis and kirsch liqueur. The fruit's phenomenal purity and denseness, as well as its overall balance is admirable in view of the massive, muscular personality of this huge, full-bodied wine oozing with extract. It is a tour de force in winemaking.

Château Angelus was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it had been 1er Grand Cru Classé B since 1954). It shares the top of the Saint-Emilion wine classification with Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The Château Angelus vineyard is located on the hillside, a steep south-facing slope. The clay-limestone soil rests on a limestone base. The grape variety composition is approximately 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In certain years, such as 2003, the proportion of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! The wine matures for 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, Château Angelus has begun its conversion to organic farming, which should be completed in 2023.

The greatest vintages of the château are Angelus 1988, Angelus 1989, Angelus 1990, Angelus 1993, Angelus 1994, Angelus 2000 and Angelus 2001.
