The history of Château Boyd-Cantenac

The history of Château Boyd-Cantenac began in 1754, when squire Jacques Boyd acquired the property and gave it his name. He came from an important family of merchants originally from Belfast in Scotland, some of whom had settled in Bordeaux as early as the 17th century.

Even then, his wine enjoyed a fine reputation, and was ranked third cru de Cantenac by the wine broker Labadie as early as 1776.

In 1806, the Château Boyd-Cantenac vineyard was bought by a Bordeaux merchant and wine lover, John Lewis Brown, also from Scotland and married to Jacques Boyd‘s granddaughter.

Following financial difficulties, the Brown heirs sold the property in 1843 to Monsieur Gromard, a banker, and Monsieur Verrière. This sale marked the beginning of the division of the vineyard into two parts: Château Cantenac-Brown and Château Boyd-Cantenac.

Following the epidemics of the mid-19th century, which wiped out the vineyard, Château Boyd-Cantenac ceased to exist, only to be reconstituted by the Laurent and then Ginestet families at the beginning of the following century.

Since 1932 and now 4 generations later, Château Boyd-Cantenac has belonged to the Guillemet family, who have also owned Château Pouget since 1906. Today, the two estates share the winemaking side of the business.

Owner and technical director Lucien Guillemet, an oenologist by training, works outside the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, which promotes the region‘s grands crus worldwide.

He is proud of the fact that he has not used chemical fertilizers on his vines for over 40 years.

What are the characteristics of Château Boyd Cantenac wines?

A small 17-hectare estate, Château Boyd-Cantenac benefits from a lean, draining siliceous gravel soil that facilitates deep rooting of the 40-year-old vines.

This soil retains heat during the day and releases it at night, allowing the grapes to ripen and concentrate their aromas.

The vineyard, run according to the precepts of organic farming even though it is not certified, is planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (5%).

The wines of Château Boyd-Cantenac reveal the specific characteristics of their terroir, and are recognized as being among the most distinctive of the Margaux appellation.

Château Boyd-Cantenac‘s great red wine, with its subtle, fine aromatic bouquet, combines elegance, complexity and density with freshness and length on the palate. It requires considerable cellar ageing to reveal its full potential. It‘s an excellent wine for laying down at a reasonable price.

The estate also produces several second red wines, lighter and fruitier than the first wine Château Boyd-Cantenac, made from younger vines: Jacques Boyd, La Croix de Boyd-Cantenac and Joséphine de Boyd. All in the Margaux appellation.

Château Boyd-Cantenac is also behind the vinification of a harmonious wine, Clos Maucaillou, in the Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, made from a majority of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
