For Bordeaux wines, a rather satisfactory year. Marked by changeable weather with a hot summer and heavy rains before the harvest, severe sorting was necessary. Talented producers manage to stand out with fleshy and balanced wines. The best successes are found in the Médoc, particularly in the Margaux, Saint-Julien, and Pessac-Léognan appellations. The same observation applies to Burgundy wines, with capricious weather but ultimately a very decent yield and grape quality. The red Burgundies improve with time, but the whites are not built for ageing.

In the Rhône, a difficult period spanning 1991 to 1994 continued as heavy rain swept away the benefits of favourable summer conditions. In the south, severe flooding began in mid-September. The resulting wines are fairly light.

Our advice on buying a 1993 wine.

Among the finest successes of this vintage, we recommend Château Angelus 1993, Château Margaux 1993, Château Pape Clément 1993 and Château Talbot 1993, all of which produced fine wines. Sauternes from this year are best avoided, as heavy rain damaged the quality of the vintage.

For Burgundy wines, look instead to the reds: they are good and complex, with a finish that develops with time.

In the northern Rhône Valley, the 1993 wines are of lower quality. In the southern Rhône, however, the reds are excellent. Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas produced a great vintage.
