The wines from the 1870 vintage. In Bordeaux, the 1870 vintage, along with 1864 and 1865, is one of the most magnificent of all classic pre-phylloxera Bordeaux. As in 1945, spring frosts reduced the potential harvest and an extremely hot summer increased the sugar content, leading to an early harvest of very ripe and concentrated wines. The best wines from this vintage are Château Lafite Rothschild 1870, Latour 1870, Margaux 1870 and Château Mouton Rothschild 1870. Circumstances were rather favourable for the production of old 1870 port wines. While considering the ravages of phylloxera on the harvests, the ports are particularly successful in this vintage.
