expert's opinions
Information on the vintage 1988 red Bordeaux : 4/5 The first of a trio of very good vintages and the penultimate vintage of a more than interesting decade. This very good vintage is undervalued; but in the end, time and tannin will be jostling for supremacy.

This is one of those lovely surprises that Bordeaux throws up every now and then. A relatively unheralded Pomerol, more than 3 decades old, and drinking beautifully after 3 hours in the decanter. It had a nicely mature nose of earth and meat, plums and spice, with a drift of tobacco drifting around the edges of the bouquet. The palate was even better. Soft and rounded, with velvet tannins and superbly fresh acidity forming a lovely backdrop for delicious flavours of sweet plums and cherries, earth and spice; and then a little chocolate and smoky tobacco running into a very satisfying finish. Soft, melting, yet wonderfully fresh and lively, with lots of subtle complexities winding their way through the palate - this was such a yummy drink. A hidden gem of a Merlot, absolutely singing now.

Château informations
CHÂTEAU DE SALES, Pomerol, Bordeaux wine, Château de Sales dates back to the 17th century. Located north of Libourne, it benefits from the Pomerol appellation. Its splendid architecture with silky character makes it an exceptional and refined site classified as a historical monument, reflecting what Pomerol wines symbolize. With an area of 90 hectares, CHÂTEAU DE SALES dominates the largest Pomerol appellation. For more than 5 centuries, Château de Sales has belonged to the same family who emphasizes the transmitted values of terroir and sustainable cultivation, respectfully cultivating the 47 hectares of vines to produce healthy and ripe grapes. The management of the vineyard and production has been entrusted to Bruno De Lambert, who holds a degree in ampelography and oenology, ensuring meticulous monitoring and consistency in the production of quality wines.
