Tobacco, herbal and spicy, in the underlay sweet wild berryish note, ripe cherries, some liquorice, but also a hint of raspberryish concentrate, candied orange zest and nougat in the background, very attractive bouquet. Deep, juicy and complex, ripe fruit nuances, firm, well-ripened tannins that are both silky and seamless, dark cherries in the finish. Elegant and just about to develop the right drinking maturity. I tasted three different ingredients from Rayas's trademark ancient foudres. According to Emmanuel Reynaud, the three orientations are very complementary. Coeur de Rayas - From 25- to 60-year-old vines, this is very aromatic, almost pine-flavoured. Great freshness and minerality. Shot through with sinews and muscles – very much made for the long term, even though the fruit should allow the drinker to approach it in less than 10 years. Coucher de Soleil de Rayas – West-facing vines. Again a bit reduced but with lots of finesse, fine tannins and density here. Strong, assertive personality grabs your attention. Levant de Soleil de Rayas – East-facing vines. The least tough of these three, a bit reduced. Very rich and round. Vibrant and glowing. Very Grenache.

The three component parts of the 2010 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape show it to be a deeply coloured vintage with terrific fruit intensity of liquorice, raspberries and sweet, jammy cherries. Medium to full-bodied and ripe with 15+% natural alcohol and sweet, soft tannins, this ethereal 2010 is reminiscent of the 2005 although the tannins in the 2010 are more silky.

Founded in 1880 and passed down within the same family ever since, Château Rayas holds a singular place in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation: its great red wine is a pure Grenache, aged without new oak in old large casks, on a terroir of fine sands that gives it finesse and freshness rather than power. The white wine from Rayas, a rare offering, combines Grenache Blanc and Clairette.

The bottles offered here range from the great solar years — the 1988 wine and the 1990 vintage — to the return to the summit of the 2000s, with the year 2006, the 2010 wine and a more accessible 2011, passing through 2000. So many facets of an estate that has become one of the most sought-after references in the southern Rhône.
