Lots of tertiary character, perhaps at the expense of primary fruit. Showing its age, although there is still life in the old dog yet. Opulent and expressive and lengthy, with delicious olive tapenade and game flavours on the length.

A saline, alkaline, kelp-, and oyster shell-aura such as one would more usually encounter in a white wine is evident already on the nose of Vaille's red 2007 Grange des Peres, along with a garrigue-typical evocation of wild fennel and juniper. That said, ripe plum and cassis abound as well, with the tart edge of fruit skin; piquancy of plum pit; and aforementioned mineral and herbal elements collaborating on an impressively rich yet brightly juicy and vibrantly interactive performance that practically bursts forth in a sustained and palate-staining finish of invigoration as well as saliva-inducing savour. (I would have sworn, blind, that this must be the 2008!) The mineral dimension is so distinctive and assertive that this wine is bound not to be everybody's cup of Languedoc red.

The Domaine de la Grange des Pères is the most mythical estate in the Languedoc. Founded by Laurent Vaillé, a winemaker trained alongside Gérard Chave in Hermitage, Éloi Dürrbach at Domaine de Trévallon and Jean-François Coche-Dury in Burgundy, he produced his first vintage in 1992. Located in Aniane, in the Hérault, on land neighbouring the famous Mas de Daumas Gassac, the vineyard extends over some thirty hectares of clay-limestone terroirs surrounded by garrigue, between hillsides and stony terraces.

True to an exacting vision, Laurent Vaillé chose to produce his wines under the IGP Pays de l'Hérault designation rather than an appellation, in order to retain complete freedom of blending. La Grange des Pères rouge brings together syrah, mourvèdre and cabernet sauvignon, complemented by a touch of counoise, while La Grange des Pères blanc, even rarer, is based principally on roussanne, accompanied by marsanne, chardonnay and clairette. Very low yields and long ageing of more than two years in barrels produce wines that are deep, balanced and endowed with a remarkable capacity for ageing.

Produced in very limited quantities and sold by allocation, this great wine from the Languedoc has become a cult object sought after by enthusiasts the world over. Since the passing of Laurent Vaillé in 2021, his family has continued his work in the same spirit of rigour and discretion, perpetuating the legend of this exceptional estate.
