This was the revelation of our 1998 top-tier right-bank tasting. It was simply wonderful, and pretty much perfect in every way. It had kaleidoscopic complexity, with, among other things, dark fruits enhanced by earthy, truffly and gamey notes, oriental spices, a silky texture and superb length on the palate.

The L’Eglise was still very young and reserved. It was soft and silky yet firm and gorgeous. It was full-bodied with a gorgeous core of raspberry and spices on the palate, with chocolate and mahogany notes.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The Château l'Eglise-Clinet 1998 has developed an absolutely stunning bouquet: precocious, glycerin-rich red cherries, cassis, violets and minerals all beautifully defined and so intense. The palate is full-bodied with ripe tannin, layers of sweet blackberry and wild strawberry fruit intermingling with white pepper, cumin, black truffle and tar. There is a crescendo towards the finish that just fans out across the mouth. After 17 years, it is a Pomerol that will take on all comers in the appellation with the exception of the 1998 Petrus. It will give 40-50 years worth of drinking pleasure.

Still young, tannic and slightly muscular, the wine has character, complexity, opulence, balance and freshness. I would like to see a bit more of a velvet edge to the texture, but this is turning out to be a very good wine that should offer pleasure for at least another 25-30 years.

Jean-Marc Quarin June - 2008

Tasted blind, not decanted. Dark colour, slightly evolved. Smoky, deep nose, with fresh fruit, ink and new oak. Very good entry on the palate, where the wine develops broad, powerful and caressing. It has a strong cassis flavour on the mid-palate, but also energy in the structure. It finishes tannic, with notes of new oak and good length, with an inky flavour.

Very sweet. Tarry, rich and juicy. Very impressive and pretty massive but well balanced.

Château L'Eglise Clinet
Château l'Eglise Clinet, like many Pomerol estates, owes its name to its proximity to the commune's church, which sits majestically amidst the vineyards. Despite its low media profile due to its very limited production, Château l'Eglise Clinet remains one of the very best in the Pomerol appellation, on par with Château l'Evangile or Château la Conseillante. Ideally located on the deep soils of the Pomerol plateau, the vines of Château l'Eglise Clinet are survivors of the great frost of 1956, which led to the uprooting of most vines in the appellation. This small Pomerol gem was operated by Pierre Lasserre, who also owned Clos René in Pomerol. In the early 1980s, the perfectionist Denis Durantou took over the 6 hectares of vines (averaging 45 years old). Château l'Eglise Clinet also produces a second wine called La Petite Eglise.
