95 / 100
Wine Spectator May - 1998
Wine Spectator
Incredibly powerful. Thick and rich, with lots of toasted oak that tastes a bit sharp, burning and bitter. A wine with a fine track record (try the 1989 Perrières from Lafon, which drinks wonderfully), it offers almost botrytis flavours (honey, dried fruits, fig and date character) accompanied by a thick mid-palate. Full-bodied but with medium acidity, it is very concentrated. To be kept permanently in the cellar.

Meursault Les Perrières has deep mineral and earthy tones on the nose and toasty, nutty and iron flavours on the palate. Powerful and full-bodied, it has great length and great balance. This note is the result of tastings that I carried out in Burgundy between January 7 and 29. Ratings with a rating range in parentheses indicate that the wine was tasted from barrel and not from bottle. Dominique Lafon, who has run this estate alone since 1987, believes his 95s are the best set of wines he has made to date. I would ignore this kind of statement from most Burgundy producers as they are often prone to hyperbole, but Lafon walks the walk as well as talks the talk. His reputation is such that his wines sell instantly, regardless of the reviews. Second, he is not the type of man to risk his credibility, nor is he inclined to brag immodestly. His 95 wines are exceptional wines that may have better structure than those of previous vintages and, therefore, can age and evolve more gracefully. He has produced fatter, richer wines in the past (in the '89s for example), but, in general, conservation has not improved them. I think the 95 will be different.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is an estate that produces Burgundy wines. It encompasses 13.8 hectares of some of the region's most renowned growths, planted with Chardonnay in the villages of Meursault, Puligny and Montrachet, and Pinot Noir in the villages of Volnay and Monthélie.

One of the greatest among the greats. Dominique Lafon implements everything possible to produce the finest white wines. Biodynamic farming, meticulous aging, from Meursault to Montrachet, the range is impressively consistent in quality. You'll love the white wines, but don't forget the perfectly mastered Volnay Santenots du Milieu.

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is the most universally admired estate in the world for Volnay and Meursault appellations. The vineyard heritage is unique, with ideal locations for each lieu-dit, and for the main red plot, Santenots du Milieu, a large enough area to allow rigorous grape selection and vinification with sufficient mass for optimal extraction control. The white wines have a unique sumptuous body and flavor, and the reds have an optimal balance between power and finesse.
