Jean-Marc Quarin December - 1998
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark red colour. Medium intensity. Slight evolution. Nose of medium intensity. Toasted. Lightly fruity. On swirling, a touch of vanilla. Soft attack, developing on a fairly fruity structure with a caressing texture and medium body. Well-balanced tannic evolution, with a smoky nuance and medium aromatic persistence, still slightly smoky-toasted. Pleasant without being complex. Worth tasting. A wine more about aromas than substance.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Cantemerle's 1994is deep ruby-colored with purple nuances, offering sweet berry fruit in the nose, along with new oak and weedy notes. In the mouth, the wine reveals moderate concentration and good body for the vintage, but a dry, angular personality with astringent tannin in the finish. It is a gamble whether this wine will ever shed enough tannin to come into complete harmony, but it is well made, and may turn out to be surprisingly attractive.

Château Cantemerle

Théophile-Jean Dubos, husband of Charlotte Delbos, took over the estate in 1892, with the help of his two sons Pierre and Bernard. Théophile Dubos was both a wine grower and owner of Cantemerle, vice-president of the Syndicat des crus classés du Médoc and a merchant of the Dubos Frères house, which was sold in 1914. Upon Théophile's death in 1905, Pierre and Bernard Dubos were co-owners of Cantemerle until 1923, when Pierre became the sole owner. During the war and the crisis years of 1930-1940, many vineyard plots were uprooted at Cantemerle, so that from 1945 onwards, only about 25 hectares were cultivated, which were maintained until 1981. Upon Pierre Dubos' death in 1962, his grandson Bertrand Clauzel became the sole manager and remained so until the estate was sold in 1981 to the Mutuelles d'Assurance du Bâtiment et des Travaux Publics.
