The history of Château Clerc Milon

Château Clerc Milon is a vineyard located in Pauillac in Gironde, France. It was founded in the 18th century and is part of the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification, where it is classified as a Fifth Growth.

In 1789, Château Clerc Milon was sold as national property during the French Revolution. The Clerc family bought it back in 1800 and gave it its current name.

In 1855, Château Clerc Milon was classified as a Fifth Growth in the official Bordeaux wine classification. The estate then covered about thirty hectares.

In 1970, Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired Château Clerc Milon. He launched a modernisation programme for the estate, which included replanting the vineyard and building a gravity-flow winery.

In 1983, the Château Clerc Milon label was adorned with a pair of dancers in precious stones, a piece of 17th-century German jewellery.

In 2011, Château Clerc Milon inaugurated a new 3,600 m² winery.

What are the characteristics of Château Clerc Milon wines?

Château Clerc Milon is a 41-hectare vineyard located in the northeast of Pauillac. It sits on the Mousset ridge, overlooking the Gironde.

- An exceptional terroir

The vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir, with a slight slope that promotes natural drainage and sun exposure. The proximity to the river creates a microclimate that protects the vines from spring frosts, reduces the risk of hail and brings freshness in summer. The soil consists of two-thirds deep sandy gravel, sitting on a clay-limestone base.

- A wine for long-term aging

The vineyard is planted with five typical grape varieties of the region: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. The vines have an average age of 53 years, which is one of the highest in the Médoc. The planting density is high, with 8,500 to 10,000 vines per hectare.

Viticulture is practiced in an 'integrated' way, respecting the environment and strictly limiting the use of phytosanitary products. The vineyard is carefully monitored and undergoes strict plot selection.

- An elegant and powerful wine

Château Clerc Milon is a wine for long-term aging, powerful, tannic, fruity and harmoniously structured. It possesses all the typical elegance of the best Pauillac growths.

The best vintages of Château Clerc Milon

The best vintages of Château Clerc Milon are 1929, 1945 and 1982. The 1961 and 1990 vintages are simply exceptional.

Food and wine pairings

Château Clerc Milon wines pair wonderfully with beef, game and poultry in general. Notable pairings also include truffle omelette, Pauillac milk-fed lamb and cep mushroom ravioli. For cheese, maroilles pairs perfectly with this red wine.
