Our opinion on the 1923 vintage: a great year for Burgundy wines. The 1923 vintage was a complicated year, but excellent for Burgundy wines. In Bordeaux, spring was cold and wet, followed by a hot summer. The 1923 wines are decent thanks to a certain initial charm. However, the Sauternes are of slightly superior quality, rich and indulgent but some wines have dried out.

In Burgundy, the wines of the 1923 vintage were highly successful. According to Jacques Puisais, it was ‘the second truly great year of the century’. Benefiting from fine, sunny summer weather, the reds are supple and mellow. White Burgundies excelled and are of exceptionally high quality, though opportunities to taste them are becoming rare.

There were also several successful 1923 Champagnes, despite the small harvest. Tasting them can be something of a gamble, but the wines can still offer a delicious and enjoyable experience.

Rhône wines from this year are best avoided. Producers suffered a second year of serious setbacks. Even so, the 1923 vintage is slightly better than 1922.

     

Our advice on buying a 1923 wine

The 1923 vintage is unquestionably better in Burgundy, with some remarkable premiers crus and grands crus. Its wines gain tannic texture and liveliness, giving them staying power. We recommend the Beaune, Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Romanée, Santenay and Savigny-lès-Beaune appellations.
