Create an alert

Château Cheval Blanc embodies one of the most refined expressions of the Saint-Émilion appellation and ranks among the great iconic wines of Bordeaux. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A, the estate is distinguished by a unique terroir situated on the border of Pomerol, combining gravels, clays and sands. This geological diversity, combined with an atypical grape variety composition dominated by Cabernet Franc, lends the wines an elegant structure, great aromatic complexity and an exceptional capacity for ageing.
The vineyard, managed according to a rigorous plot-by-plot approach, is subject to separate vinifications in a winery designed to respect the identity of each terroir.

Its great vintages mark the history of Bordeaux: the 1947 vintage remains the estate's pinnacle, one of the greatest wines of the 20th century, whilst 1949, 1982 and then 1990 extend the series. More accessible today, 1983 and the wine of 1986 illustrate the sunny years of the Right Bank, alongside the second wine Le Petit Cheval.

History and identity of Château Cheval Blanc

The history of Château Cheval Blanc is intimately linked to that of Saint-Émilion, while standing apart through its own distinct identity. The presence of the vine on its land is documented as far back as the 15th century, but it was in the mid-19th century that the estate took on its current configuration, notably through the integration of plots from what is now Château Figeac. From that period onwards, the singularity of its terroir and grape variety composition laid the foundations of the Cheval Blanc style.

Throughout the 20th century, the estate established itself as one of the major references of the Bordeaux Right Bank, building its reputation on remarkable consistency and a pronounced stylistic independence. Its classification as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A consecrates an estate already recognised as a historic pillar of the appellation. Cheval Blanc has always championed a lasting qualitative vision, independent of trends, founded on an intimate understanding of its soils and grape varieties.

Terroir and viticultural environment

The Château Cheval Blanc vineyard covers approximately 39 hectares, divided into more than fifty distinct plots. This plot-by-plot fragmentation reflects the estate's exceptional geological diversity, where deep gravels, clays, sands and intermediate zones combine. This mosaic allows for a balanced water supply to the vines and encourages the progressive ripening of the grapes.

Situated in immediate proximity to Pomerol, Cheval Blanc benefits from a hybrid terroir, at the crossroads of two great expressions of the Right Bank. The grape variety composition, comprising approximately 55% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, is unique in Saint-Émilion and plays a determining role in the signature of the wines, bringing freshness, tension and ageing potential.

Production philosophy and wine style of Château Cheval Blanc

Viticulture is carried out according to an extremely precise plot-by-plot approach. Each plot is observed, harvested and vinified separately in order to respect its own identity. Yields are deliberately controlled and harvesting is carried out at perfect ripeness, with constant attention paid to the balance between concentration and freshness.

Vinifications are conducted with precision, without seeking excessive extraction. The winery, inaugurated in the early 2010s and designed specifically for plot-by-plot vinification, allows containers and protocols to be adapted to each batch. Ageing in barrels accompanies the refinement of the wine without ever masking the aromatic expression or the natural texture.

The style of Château Cheval Blanc wines is distinguished by a rare alliance between controlled power and elegance, a silky texture and an aromatic complexity blending dark fruits, floral notes, gentle spices and mineral nuances.

Ageing potential and critical recognition

The wines of Château Cheval Blanc rank among the greatest age-worthy wines of Bordeaux. Thanks to the structure provided by Cabernet Franc and the natural balance of the blends, they evolve harmoniously over several decades, gaining in depth, finesse and complexity with time.

International critical recognition has been consistent for more than a century, highlighting the estate's unique capacity to produce wines of great longevity while retaining freshness and elegance, regardless of vintage conditions.

Placing in context within the Saint-Émilion appellation

Within Saint-Émilion, Château Cheval Blanc occupies a unique position, both in terms of its terroir and its style. It nonetheless sits within an environment of excellence, alongside other major estates of the appellation such as Château Ausone, renowned for its structure and longevity, Château Angélus, celebrated for its intensity and precision, and Château Figeac, whose geological proximity and grape varieties recall certain stylistic affinities. Through its heritage, the singularity of its vineyard and the consistency of its wines, Château Cheval Blanc contributes fully to the worldwide renown of Saint-Émilion as one of the great terroirs of the Bordeaux Right Bank.
