Among the great wines of Bordeaux, the Grands Crus Classés of Graves hold a truly special place. Both discreet and prestigious, they embody the perfect balance between tradition, finesse, and authenticity.
Located south of Bordeaux, the Graves appellation is the only wine region whose official classification (dating back to 1953 and revised in 1959) includes both red and white wines.
In this article, discover the history, terroir, and emblematic estates of this unique appellation—a true symbol of Bordeaux excellence.

History and Classification of the Crus of Graves

The classification of the Grands Crus Classés of Graves was established by the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine in 1953 and later completed in 1959. Unlike the 1855 classification, which was limited to the Médoc and Sauternes regions, the Graves classification recognizes both red and white wines.
A rare fact: all of the classified estates are now located within the sub-appellation of Pessac-Léognan, created in 1987 to honor the unique character of this exceptional terroir.

This classification includes 16 châteaux: six produce red wines, three produce white wines, and seven craft both.
Among them, the legendary Château Haut-Brion—also ranked as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855—remains a global benchmark of refinement.

The specificities of the Graves terroir

The name “Graves” comes from the gravelly soils deposited by the Garonne River over thousands of years. This mix of siliceous and stony gravel, often blended with sand and clay, provides perfect natural drainage and ensures even ripening of the grapes.
These ideal conditions allow for a unique balance of power and elegance—an expression that defines both the red and white wines of the region.

The temperate oceanic climate of southern Bordeaux, softened by the nearby forests and the river, ensures consistent vintages and remarkable overall quality.

The emblematic Grands Crus Classés of Graves

Château Haut-Brion

An absolute symbol of the great wines of Bordeaux, Château Haut-Brion (Pessac) is the only wine from the Graves region included in the 1855 classification. Its red, complex and distinguished, combines a fine tannic structure with deep aromas of truffle, tobacco, and blackcurrant. The rare white wine reveals exceptional aromatic intensity.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

A neighbor to the former, La Mission Haut-Brion often rivals it in prestige. Its red wines display admirable power, supported by remarkable aging potential.

Château Pape Clément

One of the oldest estates in Bordeaux (founded in the 13th century), Pape Clément captivates with the richness and silkiness of its red wine, while its white stands out for its mineral brightness and floral notes.
