Vintages The 1988 vintage by SoDivin 10 July 2025 10 July 2025 4K views 4K A 1988 wine should definitely not be underestimated. While this year doesn’t reach the brilliance of the legendary vintages that followed, it nonetheless produced wines true to their terroir, with great typicity and often excellent aging potential, particularly in Burgundy, the Northern Rhône, and Champagne. For lovers of classic, age-worthy wines, the 1988 vintage still offers some delightful surprises. Bordeaux wines in 1988 In Bordeaux, the 1988 vintage was characterized by a rather cool summer and rains in September which complicated the harvest for some. However, many producers, particularly those who harvested at the right time, succeeded in producing balanced and classic wines. Red wines from the 1988 Bordeaux vintage are characterized by a beautiful structure and firm, sometimes even hard, tannins, balanced by good acidity and a lovely extract of ripe fruit. These red wines were sometimes compared to the 1986s, though without always having the same depth or immediate brilliance. However, many châteaux are now revealing themselves magnificently, often exceeding expectations. The initial austerity and firmness have given way to a balance and distinction typical of great age-worthy wines. The biggest names in Bordeaux are particularly enjoyable to taste right now. Notable examples include Château Lafite Rothschild 1988, Latour 1988, La Mission Haut-Brion 1988, and Lafleur 1988. As for Sauternes, the warm and humid October weather greatly favored the development of noble rot. These sweet wines offer a classic style and excellent aging potential, marking this vintage with their balance, elegance, and refinement. Château d’Yquem 1988 and Rayne Vigneau 1988 are perfect examples. “An archetypal Bordeaux vintage: fresh, pleasing, medium-bodied, that gracefully endures through time, with controlled ripeness in service of finesse.”Olivier Poussier, best sommelier in the world 2000. Burgundy wines in 1988 For Burgundy wines in 1988, it was a year of great success, especially for the reds. The climate was favorable, with ideal conditions during flowering and a warm summer, followed by dry weather during the harvest. The 1988 Pinot Noirs are renowned for being very tannic and concentrated wines—wines that filled cellars and drove up prices. This vintage truly represents a consecration of Pinot Noir in Burgundy. These powerful wines need time for their tannins to soften, making them bottles to be treasured. For white wines, it was also a good vintage, producing Chardonnays with beautiful minerality and good structure. DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE CONTI 1988 The 1988 vintage champagnes For Champagne in 1988, despite climatic challenges such as hail in early May and disease pressure, the year is nonetheless considered a very fine vintage. The perseverance and expertise of the winemakers helped compensate for a reduced harvest volume. The Pinot Noirs and Meuniers are particularly superb, giving rise to Champagnes of great finesse and magnificent rosé Champagnes. Champagnes from this year, such as Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut 1988, Krug 1988, and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1988, are distinguished by their balance, depth, and excellent aging potential, revealing complex aromas and a beautiful vinosity over time. VEUVE CLICQUOT PONSARDIN La Grande Dame Rosé 1988 The Rhone Valley in 1988 The Rhône Valley experienced one of the vintages of the century in 1988, captivating palates, particularly in the North, with its finesse. This vintage holds a lasting and admiring appeal due to its charm and roundness in the reds, and its elegance in the whites (especially in Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Saint-Péray). Climatic conditions allowed for good grape ripeness without excess. In the Northern Rhône, Syrahs yielded powerful, deep, and well-structured wines with excellent aging potential. Appellations like Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage produced remarkable wines. In the Southern Rhône, the wines were also of good quality, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape offering concentration and fruit, though sometimes less exuberant than in other banner years.
