History

The history of Château Beychevelle is rich and closely linked to that of the region. The name “Beychevelle” comes from “Baisse-Voile,” a reference to the obligation for boats sailing on the Garonne to lower their sails as a sign of respect in front of the property of the Duke of Épernon, governor of Guyenne in the 17th century.

This legend marked the identity of the estate, and its image is still present on the label of the bottles.

The property

The Château Beychevelle estate covers approximately 250 hectares, including 90 hectares of vineyards. The grape varieties are traditional for Bordeaux, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyard, with an average age of 30 years, reaches an ideal maturity for producing exceptional grapes.

With its brand-new winery, Château Beychevelle combines innovation and tradition, demonstrating its haute couture expertise. This new winery allows for plot-by-plot vinification, meaning each plot of vines is vinified separately. This approach allows for maximum respect for the specific characteristics of each terroir, and thus produces wines that are as faithful as possible to their origins.

Ranking

Since the Grand Classification of the Médoc in 1855, experts have ranked Château Beychevelle as the fourth Grand Cru Classé. Connoisseurs appreciate Saint-Julien for its numerous Grand Cru Classés, including Léoville-Barton, Léoville-Poyferré, and Langoa-Barton. These properties contribute to the region’s worldwide renown.

Wines produced by Château Beychevelle

Sourced from the finest plots of Saint-Julien, Château Beychevelle stands out for its elegance, finesse, complexity, and aromatic richness. Moreover, this wine, which improves with age, reaches its peak after about ten years and can be aged for many decades.

The 1982 Château Beychevelle and 1990 Château Beychevelle are remarkable. They are considered Bordeaux classics and have aged beautifully.

The Second Wine of Château Beychevelle – Amiral de Beychevelle

The meticulousness that characterizes the production of Château Beychevelle’s great wine is reflected in its second wine, Amiral de Beychevelle. Although the grapes come primarily from the estate’s young vines, the winemakers craft them with care, using rigorous sorting and traditional aging. As a result, it offers an elegance and finesse comparable to its elder, with a freshness and liveliness that make it pleasant to drink young.
