Montirius: Authentic and biodynamic estate

A family estate

The domaine Montirius is located in the town of Sarrians in the Rhône Valley.

In the same family for five generations, today it is Christine and Eric Saurel who are at the head of the estate, supported by their two daughters Justine and Manon.

A resolutely human and authentic family story, because the name of the domain “Montirius” is the contraction of the first names of the three children of Christine and Eric Saurel:

MON (Manon) – TI (Justine) – RIUS (Marius).

Biodynamics, the identity of the Domaine Montirius

The vineyard covers 63 hectares and has been growing its vines biodynamically since 1996. The estate produces its wines in the Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Côte du Rhône appellations and some Vaucluse country wines. Certified in biodynamics by Biodyvin in 1999, the owners have worked for more than 25 years to preserve this unique terroir and the biodiversity of the estate.

Montirius bottles nature, and nothing else! The estate is one of the first biodynamic farms in the Gigondas and Vaqueyras appellations. Biodynamics is not just a philosophy in the eyes of the owners but truly a way of life.

Nature occupies a central place at the Domaine Montirius, where a very strong link with the earth and “the living” is respected.

Wines, the expression of a unique terroir

This love for the land and nature is felt through the estate’s different wines.

Montirius produces red and white wines, but also some rosés. In total, around ten different vintages in the four appellations: Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Côte du Rhône and vin de pays de Vaucluse.

The flagship vintages

Among all these vintages, we find the Montirius Terre des Aînés, a wine from a large 10-hectare plot that has always been inherited for 5 generations to the eldest of the siblings. We suggest the Terre des Aînés 2016.

Montirius Garrigues, is also a wine to discover. A perfumed wine, which reveals on the nose and in the mouth the perfumes of the Garrigues (Thyme, Rosemary, Savory, Black Pepper…). For a tasting, we recommend the Garrigues 2018.

Le Montirius Le Clos, is a wine from a protective place of century-old oaks surrounding the plot, a grand cru clay. The place is completely enclosed hence its name of cuvée. We suggest Le Clos 2016.

Finally, Montirius Confidentiel is the expression of an exclusive terroir. The vineyard is located in a corner of the large 10 hectare plot. “La Beaumette” gave birth to this wine. Discovered during tastings and pre-assemblages in 2004 by the owners. This newcomer surprised us with his fullness, his great harmony, despite his youth. Two choices were available to them, make a blend identical to other years and make this gift of nature disappear or accept not to understand and share this discovery with Montirius lovers by bottling it separately. This is how the name “Confidentiel” was born, because it is a confidence of the place. For a tasting, we recommend the Montirius Confidentiel 2015
