The Domaine Guigal located in the ancient village of Ampuis is an icon of the Rhone Valley vineyard. It produces, among other things, three emblematic vintages in the Côte Rôtie appellation, called the La-La-La trilogy, a contraction of La Mouline, La Turque, La Landonne. They are among the most sought-after wines in the region.

What is the history of Domaine E. Guigal?

Domaine Guigal was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, the birthplace of Côte Rôtie wines in the northern Rhône Valley.

His son, Marcel Guigal, took over management of the estate in 1961. An excellent winemaker, he too has contributed to the reputation of the estate’s wines, perpetuating quality work in both vineyard and cellar, sustainable agriculture, manual harvesting and long ageing.

Maison Guigal has become an icon in just two generations. Today, its vineyards cover all the prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Gigondas, Crozes-Hermitage.

Philippe Guigal, Marcel’s son and third-generation winegrower, is a brilliant oenologist.

The La-La-La trilogy, the three most emblematic cuvées of the Côte Rôtie appellation.

Guigal produces three prestigious cuvées: La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque, which are the envy of wine lovers. This sublime trilogy comes from Domaine Guigal’s most legendary parcels in the Côte Rôtie appellation. They receive special attention from the vine to the cellar, and express the full elegance and complexity of their terroir.

La Mouline is made from vines almost 75 years old, using traditional Côte Rôtie grape varieties: 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier.

La Turque comes from younger vines, around 25 years old, composed of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier.

La Landonne is the only single-varietal cuvée, 100% Syrah aged around 35 years.

These three cuvées benefit from a unique 40-month ageing period in new barrels. The price of this trilogy can be very high, depending on the vintage.

The La-La-La trilogy from Domaine Guigal is part of the very closed circle of wines that have already been awarded 100/100 by the American critic Robert Parker of the specialist magazine Wine Advocat. Here are some vintages:

Rated 100/100 by Robert Parker – Wine Advocate

“La Landonne 1990 is a perfect wine! Fortunately, over 800 cases were produced. It has an opaque black color, and a huge perfumed nose of truffle, licorice, cassis and pepper. While it’s one of the most concentrated wines I’ve ever tasted, it’s perfectly balanced, with sufficient acidity, huge extraction of ripe fruit, tannin, and a phenomenal finish of 70 seconds or more. Such is the essence of Syrah!”

GUIGAL La Turque 2003

GUIGAL La Turque 2003

Rated 100/100 by Robert Parker – Wine Advocate

“I’ve always loved the Guigal family’s 2003s, and the 2003 Côte Rôtie la Turque has never disappointed. An incredible perfume of smoky herbs, charred meats, violets, licorice and cassis gives way to a huge, unctuous, powerful Côte Rôtie that has masses of ripe, sweet tannins, full-bodied richness and a finish that just won’t quit. Enjoy this heavenly elixir over the next 2-3 decades.”

GUIGAL La Mouline 2010

GUIGAL La Mouline 2010

Rated 100/100 by Robert Parker – Wine Advocate

“As for three parcel releases, I reviewed the 2010 Côte Rôtie La Mouline earlier this year, but was more than happy to taste it again (lucky me) for this report. Incorporating a full 11% Viognier and sourced from the steeply terraced vineyards of Côte Blonde, it boasts a heavenly bouquet of spring flowers, incense, violets, charcuterie and sweet cassis. Full-bodied, voluptuous and as fluid as can be, Syrah simply doesn’t get any more seductive, sexy or impressive. Give it 5-6 years and drink bottles over the next 2 decades or more.”
