It is France’s first appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC). It is located in the southern Rhône region, north of the city of Avignon. The appellation covers more than 3,200 hectares of vines and extends over 5 communes in the Vaucluse department: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bédarrides, Courthézon, Orange and Sorgues. The wines of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation are the result of a combination of Mediterranean climate, atypical terroir and winegrowers’ know-how. The appellation is characterized by the “galets roulés” (rounded pebbles) soils found in many vineyards. They have the particularity of transferring the heat stored during the day to the grapes. This ensures perfect ripening of the grapes. There are also other types of soil: SandsLimestonesRed clays Under the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, preserving the terroir and the know-how of the winegrowers remains a priority. That’s why harvesting is traditionally done by hand. No more than 13 grape varieties may be produced. The thirteen grape varieties include Grenache (black, gray and white), Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Clairette (white and pink), Vaccarèse, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Counoise, Muscardin, Piquepoul, Picardan and Terret noir. Grenache remains the most common grape variety in Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wines, followed by Mourvèdre and Syrah. The AOC’s white wines are a perfect blend of Grenache blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Roussanne.
