The 1984 was still drinking well but without the red fruit and floral notes that I associate with Rayas. As someone noted earlier, black tea and wet earth combine with plums make up the profile. It is medium bodied with fully integrated tannins. There is a little bit of woodsy, green on the finish.

Château Rayas
Château Rayas

The Rayas Estate is located in the south of the Rhône Valley, in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Founded by Albert Reynaud and passed down through four generations, this discreet family estate spans only 10 hectares and has established itself as a major reference for great Rhône wines.

Long managed by Emmanuel Reynaud, who recently passed away, the estate today perpetuates his legacy and singular vision of wine. The Reynaud family is also behind Domaine des Tours and Château de Fonsalette. At Rayas, Grenache is the sole grape variety for red wines, while white wines are made from Grenache and Clairette, in a style marked by finesse, purity and expression of terroir.

Among Rayas' emblematic vintages are notably Rayas 1990, Rayas 2006, Rayas 2007, Rayas 2009 and Rayas 1989, essential references of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
