Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
An undeniable star of the vintage, Pichon-Baron’s 2004 boasts an inkyrubypurple color to the rim as well as a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, chocolate, black currant jam, truffles, and charcoal embers. Soft tannin, full body, and abundant opulence and flesh are atypical for the vintage character, but this wine is loaded. Pure, ripe, and evolved.

A big, juicy and blackcurranty nose, with lovely coffeeish depth, this seems very open and approachable, classic components without, perhaps, as much sense of expectation/anticipation as the younger wines. A lightly open bloodiness too. On the palate has good fruit and a firm edge of coffee and liquorice, very nice fruit and a juicy freshness. A very nice wine, without the concentration and structure of the 2005 for example.

A positive surprise! Didn't expect much regarding the vintage, but: What a nose of black fruits, pencil shavings! Freshness and dark fruits on the nose, too! Atypical for a 2004 Bdx. there is vertical pressure, mid to full bodied, very smooth and perfectly integrated tannins. Lasts very long. Powerful expression. Left 1/3 in the bottle overnight and even improved on the 2nd day! This wine should be great over the next decades but is in a perfect spot already! Best Bordeaux I've had so far of this vintage!

Dark and slightly evolved color. Nose of medium intensity, with ripe fruitiness. Creamy note. Melted and very pleasant on the palate, evolving slender and tasty, with perfectly enveloped tannicity. Served undecanted, it gained a little more depth in the presence of air. Good length.

Lots of currant, licorice and light tar aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, yet refined and silky on the palate, with a lightly chewy finish. Needs time.

Likable, easy drinking, forward style of Pichon Baron, that while it lacks the weight and depth of the best vintages, there is good Pauillac character and the price is more than fair.

Deep, bright garnet hue with a touch of brick at the rim. Reserved and stony on the nose, even a touch austere. Muscular and firm on the palate, the tannins almost dominating the fruit. Slightly dry finish. A rugged beauty, providing the fruit holds.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron
Château Pichon Longueville Baron

Classified a 2nd growth in 1855. The vineyard of Pichon Baron (as they called to distinguish it from its neighbor Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) is situated right next to Chateau Latour on one of the finest vineyards in Pauillac. In the seventeenth century, Jacques de Pichon Longueville Baron, began to construct the vineyard of Pichon-Longueville. The reputation of the wine was established a few years later. The present castle was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville. The wines of Château Pichon Baron come from this historic property. Resulting in full-bodied wine, rich in tannins, which are characterized by their finesse and elegance. Their length in the mouth is exceptional and they have a significant aging potential.
