expert's opinions

Showy flamboyant, rich, lush, ripe, and packed with layers of deep, dark, red, and black fruits, opulent textures, and a finish that keeps on going. This is simply great now and could be even better with a 3-5 more years of bottle age.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Both on the nose and the palate it reaches this happy medium: pure blackberry, graphite and roasted herbs on the nose, perhaps even more elegant than I have observed on previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied rather than full bodied with sturdy tannins couched in layers of seamless blackberry and cassis fruit, offset by scents of tobacco and graphite. As usual it has immense length and depth. It is not a perfect Montrose, but a couple of hairs' breadth away.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine February - 2017
Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Strong ruby red, youthful shine. Very modern-looking nose, distinct roasted notes, rich, dark fruit, tobacco, licorice, spices, very precise, still young, inviting, a great wine. The palate begins soft, almost harmless, then the tannins grip, immensely dense, warm but not clumsy, magnificent structure, very beautiful fruit, dark berries, cherries, spicy elements, very long finish, holds for 45 seconds, no heat whatsoever. Great class, still young, has enormous reserves. Now until 2035

This is a sexy, opulent wine with sweet spices and ripe cassis and plum. Palate is gorgeous with layered flavours of dark fruits, spices and herbs with a very long finish.

Fragrant red and dark fruit, some oak spice and a slight leafiness. Fresh, lively and leafy on the palate.

Wine Enthusiast January - 2006

Thought by many tasters to be the wine of the vintage at the time of the 2004 barrel tastings. It is certainly a hugely powerful wine, monumental even. It is also finely balanced, with great dark tannins working in partnership with brooding black fruit.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose, a second growth in the 1855 classification, is a 68-hectare wine estate in Bordeaux located in Saint-Estèphe.

The grape varieties at Château Montrose consist of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The grapes undergo a long fermentation of 25 to 30 days. The wine matures for 19 to 22 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new. Château Montrose wines are intense, full-bodied, and complex. They develop aromas of ripe fruit, spices, and tobacco. Château Montrose wines are both powerful and dense, characteristic of the great wines of Saint-Estèphe. The second wine is called La Dame de Montrose.

The great vintages of Château Montrose include: 1953, 1955, 1959, 1961, 1989, 1990, 2009
