A privilege to bear the name of its appellation, for Chateau Margaux there is no doubt ample justification. For several centuries this Premier Cru has expressed the highest degree of quality of exceptional terroir patiently assembled by several generations of owners. Maintained and harvested exclusively by hand with extreme care, the 78 hectares of vines (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) derive their wealth deep in the soil which is clayey gravelly and particularly dense and thick. The fermentation in oak vats, after which the wine is strictly selected, follows 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels. A masterpiece among Bordeaux, the best according to some, Château Margaux reveals the delicate taste and opulence, depth and complexity, and exudes a rare elegance of rose, violet, black fruit, suspended by tight tannins that require patient aging before the wine fully expresses itself. The château also produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux, and a dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc de Château Margaux.

In issue n° 127describing the comparative tasting between Margaux and Chateau Haut-Brion, I was surprised by the excellent results of Château Margaux 2002. I just retasted at the chateaux, with a lower score of its potential, but the same note for pleasure. Decanting: Half an hour before.
Dark and intense. Fruity nose, fresh, with a hint of ink. Beautiful entry into mouth wide enough, then the wine grows juicy, melting, air, with taste. Tasty, a little less sweet than the great vintages of Château Margaux, it finishes melting, and particularly long. Not possible to spit this wine. Note of pleasure: 17. Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Yield: 41 hl ha.Very nice color. Nice nose that draws its freshness, the brightness of the fruit and smoke notes. The entry on the palate the wine has just caress and slowly melt on the palate. Medium bodied, it has a slight liveliness in the final. And, no hardness. Beautiful aromatic length. .
Sweet and easy and round and digestible. Racy, with a very neat finish. .
This is beautiful on the nose with currants, berries and flowers. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and pretty fruit. Needs a bit more fruit on the midpalate to be a classic Margaux, but clearly outstanding.
Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn’t it?), this wine reveals a dense rubypurple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration.
