A dry and hot start to the year resulted in exceptionally early vegetation in the spring. The drought in September made it possible to harvest serenely and to compensate for the irregularity of maturity. On tasting, the power and complexity of the nose are surprising in this 1997 vintage where we find cedar wood, cigars alongside the specific aromas of the vintage. A discreet woodiness envelops the fruit. Nice supple and soft attack. Good harmony for this Château Haut Brion 1997.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A deep garnet core. The nose is lifted and vigorous, even compared to the other First Growth '97s with hints of mint, liquorice and black olives. Very attractive bouquet. The palate is full-bodied with a wonderful sense of balance, that tell-tale earthiness in the middle but very good structure and vigour. Hints of portobello mushroom, black truffle and bell pepper on the finish, with just a touch of greenness that merely complements the wine as a whole. Good length. A very fine '97 on par with Lafite. Tasted September 2006

A stunningly gorgeous red. Beautiful aromas of liquorice, berries and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, succulent finish. Very fine indeed.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

Château Haut-Brion is one of the most emblematic wines of Bordeaux. In 1855, it received the supreme distinction of Premier Cru Classé, an exceptional recognition as it is the only non-Médoc estate to appear in the classification of Médoc wines, whilst also being classified as a Cru Classé de Graves. It is today an absolute reference of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Its terroir, similar to that of Château Latour, gives the wines of Haut-Brion a unique nobility. Without seeking extreme power, the wine distinguishes itself through its elegance, the finesse of its tannins and a remarkable ageing capacity, often considered one of the greatest in Bordeaux.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest, and also the smallest in surface area, of the Bordeaux Premiers Grands Crus Classés, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux and Château Mouton Rothschild. Whilst the presence of vines in the region dates back to Roman times, the first written mention of the vineyard dates from 1423. The estate was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and quickly gained international renown. Its reputation was such that it contributed to the very birth of the notion of Grand Cru, mentioned as early as 1663 by Samuel Pepys in his celebrated diary. More recently, the estate belonged to Clarence Douglas Dillon, former United States Secretary of the Treasury, further contributing to its prestige.

Among the most emblematic vintages of Château Haut-Brion are: Château Haut-Brion 1928, Château Haut-Brion 1945, Château Haut-Brion 1953, Château Haut-Brion 1959, Château Haut-Brion 1961, Château Haut-Brion 1982, Château Haut-Brion 1990, Château Haut-Brion 1995 and Château Haut-Brion 2000.
