expert's opinions

(2-2001) For pure seductiveness, sex appeal, and charm, the 1997 Cote Rotie Blonde et Brune is a forward and charming effort. A classic expression of the appellation, with its bacon fat, smoke, cassis, and olive-scented nose, this medium to full-bodied, lush, dense, silky-textured 1997 can be drunk now and over the next decade.

Smoke, charcoal and pepper on the nose over a core of minerality. Lots of that mineral, gravelly quality on the palate with a core of sweet, rich black fruit. This has considerable depth and lots of concentration. Good balance, though needs time still. Fine and very good.

Domaine Guigal
Domaine Guigal

The Domaine E. Guigal stands as one of the absolute references of the Rhône Valley, both northern and southern. Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the family house built its reputation on a demanding interpretation of terroirs and a constant pursuit of excellence. Today led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the estate embodies a heritage vision of great wine, recognised on an international scale.

Historically based in Ampuis, Maison Guigal vinifies and matures in its cellars all the great northern Rhône appellations, including Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The same site also oversees the ageing of the iconic southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, ensuring perfect control of the ageing process and a consistent stylistic identity.

Closely associated with Côte-Rôtie, where it produces some of the most iconic cuvées of the Rhône, Domaine E. Guigal is distinguished by wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Dominant Syrah, a touch of Viognier on the Côte Blonde, patient ageing: the style combines depth and freshness and rewards patience. The estate's greatest vintages range from the 1988 wine to the 1999 vintage, taking in the Ex-Voto from 2003, through to the more recent 2016, 2017 wine and 2018.
