A stunner, with a seamless display of papaya, mango, coconut and green tea flavours tightly framed by singed hazelnut, green plum, jasmine and acacia notes. The long finish resonates with richness and purity, sailing on nearly endlessly due to the subtle tension rippling throughout. Will age glacially. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. A barrel sample, the 2016 de Fargues has a pale lemon colour and quite a profoundly scented nose at this nascent stage, with cedar, honey toast, orange marmalade and warm pineapple with hints of grapefruit and apricot preserves plus a spicy undercurrent. Château de Fargues has belonged to the same family for over half a millennium! It was in 1472 that this estate entered the Lur Saluces family patrimony.
Château de Fargues, like great Sauternes, has a lifespan of several decades. Enthusiasts of candied notes will need to wait a good twenty years before taking the wines out of their cellar. Raised by the Lur Saluces family, like Château d'Yquem, this Sauternes embodies the rigour, passion and talent of great winemakers. The vines extend over about fifteen hectares of gravelly hillocks on a clay-gravel subsoil. Grape varieties: 80% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon. Best years: 1945, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1959, 1962, 1967, 1971, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996.
