expert's opinions

Creme de cassis, black cherries, plums, tobacco and forest floor scents make up the perfume. Medium bodied, with a feminine, almost light style, this is ready to drink. The wine ends with smoke, spice and cherries.

Coloured. Lively. Good intensity. Fruity nose. Medium intensity. Smoky. Similar to the 2003 and 2002. On swirling, more intense and very, very typical Graves. The pulp seduces from the entry on the palate. The wine offers a fine touch, rich sensations and enveloped, ripe tannins in the finish. Goes down easily and I'd say one can taste it without false shame. Here's a balance that pleases me to see at Carbonnieux.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Probably the finest Carbonnieux I have tasted in over three decades, this deep ruby/purple-coloured offering reveals complex aromas of black cherries, currants, tobacco, soy, and earth. Medium-bodied, with gorgeous purity, more glycerin and depth than usual, and subtle toasty oak in the background, this is a beautiful example of refinement and breeding.

Rather closed at this showing, with a mineral nose, some earth, gravel and black cherry followed by cool black fruit on the palate. There are nice tannins and good balance, but this wasn't singing for me on this showing.

Château Carbonnieux
Château Carbonnieux
Built at the end of the 14th century on a ridge overlooking the cool stream of Eau-Blanche, Château Carbonnieux has experienced a second youth since its purchase by the Perrin family in the mid-50s. A complete renovation of the vineyard and buildings, made necessary by the general state of disrepair, was undertaken, thus restoring Château Carbonnieux to its former grace. A unique feature of the property is that they passionately produce as much red as white wine, on a deep gravel terroir that receives the utmost attention. The wines of Château Carbonnieux, with their fruity, supple and elegant character, are among the greatest representatives of Graves wines.
