Located on the left bank of the Gironde, the Ch\u00e2teau Cos d’Estournel<\/a><\/strong> is a great castle of Bordeaux with international notoriety. This domain with a very ancient history, dates from the 18th century. The vineyard extends over more than 67 hectares of vines in the heart of the Saint-Est\u00e8phe appellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great wine Ch\u00e2teau Cos d’Estournel<\/strong><\/a> is one of the second classified growths of the M\u00e9doc in the official classification of Bordeaux wines of 1855.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the oldest vines, this classified growth is particularly elegant and expresses the richness of a unique and very specific terroir of Saint-Est\u00e8phe wines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2: The origins of the name Cos d’Estournel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“Cos”<\/strong> is a Gascon word meaning hill of pebbles, “d’Estounel”<\/strong> is the surname of the founder of the Ch\u00e2teau: Louis Gaspard d\u2019Estournel. The ch\u00e2teau takes its name because it is located on a pile of gravel mixed with calcareous clay. This excess of gravel, specific to Cos, therefore forces the vine to sink its roots deeper to draw its needs from the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3: An atypical and assertive style<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ch\u00e2teau Cos d’Estournel<\/strong><\/a> is one of the most atypical estates in the Bordeaux region. The property of the domain makes its visitors travel. And for good reason, the castle has an assertive style for the East. The building looks like a real Indian palace. The main building surmounted by monumental pagodas houses the Ch\u00e2teau’s cellars. These pagodas are also visible on the labels of the classified growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This style is accentuated inside the Ch\u00e2teau, where a true symbol of the estate is present: the elephant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Exported to India in 1838<\/strong>, the wine is at the origin of Louis Gaspard d’Estournel’s passion for these countries. This is how the founder of Cos, also nicknamed “the Maharajah of Saint-Est\u00e8phe”, draws inspiration from his expeditions abroad to imagine the architecture of Cos d’Estournel and thus create a mecca for wine in atypical and assertive style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4: COS 100, the vintage tribute to the women of the Ch\u00e2teau<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To pay tribute to the women who have contributed to making Cos d’Estournel unique, the ch\u00e2teau has created a specific cuv\u00e9e called COS 100<\/strong>. This wine comes from a historical plot of the vineyard, planted in 1915 and called the “Parcelle des Femmes<\/strong>” . At that time, the women of the property worked on the estate when the men were at war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The COS 100<\/strong> is only produced in large formats: balthazars and double magnums. These formats allow the wine an exceptional capacity for ageing, a conservation that can reach decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second specificity of COS 100 is that the bottle has no label, the inscriptions are engraved directly on the glass.<\/p>\n\n\n

5: The Ch\u00e2teau produces exceptional vintages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few decades, Ch\u00e2teau Cos d’Estournel<\/a><\/strong> has produced very great vintages. Among the greatest successes, the estate has excellent vintages such as 1982<\/strong>, 1985<\/strong> and the 1986 vintage<\/strong>. Exceptional vintages such as 1990<\/strong>, 1995<\/strong> and the 2000 vintage<\/strong>. Then particularly remarkable vintages: the 2003 vintage<\/strong>, the wines of 2005<\/strong> or the majestic 2010 vintage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
