Among the Grand Crus of Burgundy<\/strong>, the Echezeaux appellation<\/strong><\/a> holds a special place. Located in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux<\/strong>, in the C\u00f4te de Nuits, it stretches between Clos de Vougeot and the vineyards of Vosne-Roman\u00e9e. Exclusively dedicated to Pinot Noir<\/strong>, it produces red wines sought after for their depth, texture and ability to evolve over time.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Classified as a Grand Cru Appellation d\u2019Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e since 31 July 1937<\/strong>, Echezeaux today covers just over 36 hectares under production. However, behind this name lies a mosaic of climats with different characteristics. This diversity partly explains the many expressions an Echezeaux wine can take depending on its origin, vintage and the estate that produces it.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The history of Echezeaux Grand Cru<\/h2>\n\n

The winegrowing history of Echezeaux dates back to the Middle Ages. Like neighbouring Clos de Vougeot, the vineyards of Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux<\/strong> were linked to the monks of C\u00eeteaux Abbey as early as the 12th and 13th centuries. The name \u201cEchezeaux\u201d is thought to have Gallo-Roman origins and may refer to a group of dwellings or an ancient hamlet. Over the centuries, the reputation of the area developed alongside that of Vosne-Roman\u00e9e and Vougeot. The current boundaries bring together several historically distinct lieux-dits. Official recognition came on 31 July 1937<\/strong>, when Echezeaux was granted Grand Cru AOC status. Today, the appellation is one of the emblematic Grand Crus<\/a><\/strong>of the C\u00f4te de Nuits, attracting both Pinot Noir enthusiasts and collectors of mature Burgundy wines.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

A terroir composed of several climats<\/h2>\n\n

One of the main characteristics of the Echezeaux appellation<\/strong> is the diversity of its terroir. Unlike some extremely small and homogeneous Burgundy Grand Crus, Echezeaux brings together several climats spread across different parts of the hillside.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The appellation notably includes Echezeaux du Dessus, Les Poulaill\u00e8res, Les Cruots ou Vignes Blanches, Les Champs Traversins, Les Lo\u00e4chausses, Les Rouges du Bas, Les Treux, Clos Saint-Denis, En Orveaux, Les Beaux Monts Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits<\/strong>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The soils therefore display a wide variety of characteristics. They include Bajocian marl<\/strong>, gravel, red silt and yellowish marl. In some of the higher parts of the vineyard, the soils can reach depths of 70 to 80 centimetres. This geological mosaic directly contributes to the diversity of wines produced under the Echezeaux appellation.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The concept of climat takes on its full meaning here. Two Echezeaux wines from different plots can display significant differences in structure, finesse, concentration and aromatic expression. The producer\u2019s style also plays a decisive role.<\/p>\n\n

Pinot Noir, the only grape variety of the Echezeaux appellation<\/h2>\n\n

Echezeaux produces exclusively red wines from Pinot Noir<\/strong>. This grape variety finds in the limestone and marl soils of the C\u00f4te de Nuits an environment particularly well suited to expressing its aromatic nuances.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

In their youth, Echezeaux wines can develop notes of cherry, red fruit, black fruit, rose and violet<\/strong>, often accompanied by spicy nuances. Their texture generally combines density, roundness and tannic structure.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

With age, the aromatic profile gradually evolves. Fresh fruit gives way to notes of undergrowth, mushroom, leather, spices and sometimes musk<\/strong>. This transformation is one of the great attractions of mature Echezeaux vintages.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

What is the style of an Echezeaux wine?<\/h2>\n\n

It is difficult to define Echezeaux by a single profile, given the diversity of the vineyard. The Grand Cru generally combines the richness associated with the great Pinot Noirs of the C\u00f4te de Nuits with a certain suppleness of texture. Depending on the climat and producer, the wine may be more floral and delicate or, conversely, denser, spicier and more structured.<\/p>\n\n

The Bourgogne Wine Board notably describes a ruby colour with deep hues, a bouquet combining flowers, cherry, spices and notes of undergrowth, as well as a palate characterised by a dense texture and fine, tightly knit tannins.<\/p>\n\n

This variety also explains the importance of choosing the right estate when buying an Echezeaux. In Burgundy, the identity of a climat and the work of the winemaker are closely linked. Ageing methods, harvest dates, the proportion of whole-bunch fermentation and vineyard practices can all lead to very different interpretations of the same Grand Cru.<\/p>\n\n

What is the difference between Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux?<\/h2>\n\n

The names can easily cause confusion, but Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux are two distinct Grand Cru appellations<\/strong>. Both are located in the commune of Flagey-Echezeaux and were granted AOC status on 31 July 1937.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The first difference lies in their size. Echezeaux represents around 36 hectares under production<\/strong>, while Grands Echezeaux covers just over 9 hectares<\/strong>, according to 2022 data from the Bourgogne Wine Board.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The terroir of Grands Echezeaux is also more homogeneous. It lies at an altitude of around 250 metres and notably features clay-limestone soils over Bajocian limestone bedrock. Echezeaux, by contrast, presents a wider variety of altitudes and soils. This distinction is reflected in the profile of the wines and explains why the two names should be considered as separate appellations in their own right.<\/p>\n\n

The leading producers of Echezeaux<\/h2>\n\n

The reputation of the appellation also rests on the estates that own plots within the Grand Cru. Among the best-known names is Domaine de la Roman\u00e9e-Conti<\/strong><\/a>, which owns vines in Echezeaux in addition to its holdings in Roman\u00e9e-Conti, La T\u00e2che, Richebourg, Roman\u00e9e-Saint-Vivant and Grands Echezeaux.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Other producers are closely associated with the appellation, including Domaine M\u00e9o-Camuzet<\/strong>, Mongeard-Mugneret<\/strong>, Georges No\u00ebllat<\/strong>, Jean Grivot<\/strong>, Emmanuel Rouget<\/strong>, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair<\/strong>, as well as several historic Burgundy houses.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

For both enthusiasts and collectors, the producer\u2019s name is an essential criterion when choosing an Echezeaux. The precise location of the estate\u2019s plots and its approach to winemaking can then help refine the selection.<\/p>\n\n

The ageing potential of an Echezeaux<\/h2>\n\n

Echezeaux Grand Cru is a wine built for ageing<\/strong>. Its structure, concentration and balance allow it to develop over many years in bottle. The Bourgogne Wine Board notes that the density and texture of the wines already begin to open up after several years of ageing. The finest examples can naturally evolve for much longer.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

However, ageing potential depends on the vintage, the producer, the climat of origin and, above all, the bottle\u2019s storage conditions. In a mature Echezeaux vintage, the profile changes considerably. Primary aromas of fruit and flowers become more discreet, revealing tertiary nuances of undergrowth, leather, spices, dried leaves and mushroom.<\/p>\n\n
