Weather conditions produced very different results depending on the region, grape variety and harvest date. In Bordeaux, September rains complicated the ripening of red grapes, while creating favourable conditions for the great sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. In Burgundy, white wines were generally more successful than reds. The Rhône Valley also experienced an interesting year, with very different profiles between Côte-Rôtie and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Nearly sixty years after the harvest, however, a 1967 wine must be considered on a bottle-by-bottle basis. The reputation of the estate and appellation matters, but the bottle’s provenance, fill level, cork and storage conditions now play an essential role.

The 1967 Vintage in Bordeaux

In Bordeaux, the year had nevertheless begun under favourable conditions. After a relatively mild winter and slightly late flowering, July and August were hot and dry. The situation changed significantly in September. The first three weeks of the month were cold and wet before sunnier weather returned towards the end of the month. The harvest of the red grapes, which began in October, was then disrupted by several periods of rain. These conditions explain the rather uneven character of 1967 Bordeaux wines. In the Médoc and Graves, the wines were generally less concentrated than those from vintages such as 1966. Many evolved quickly and have now reached an advanced stage of maturity. The best bottles can nevertheless retain the distinctive aromatic character of mature Bordeaux, with notes of leather, tobacco, undergrowth, cedar and dried fruit.

The Right Bank fared better. In Pomerol, where Merlot plays an important role, results were more consistent. Decanter even considers Pomerol to be the Bordeaux appellation that produced the most convincing red wines of the year. Petrus is notably cited among the great successes of the vintage, alongside Trotanoy and Vieux Château Certan. In Saint-Émilion, some wines from the slopes and plateau have also stood the test of time better. For lovers of mature wines, a 1967 Bordeaux should therefore not be chosen solely on the basis of the vintage. The appellation, the château and, above all, the condition of each individual bottle are decisive.

Sauternes and Barsac: Bordeaux’s Greatest Success of the 1967 Vintage

The character of the 1967 Bordeaux vintage changes completely when moving from red wines to sweet wines. In Sauternes and Barsac, the conditions that had penalised some of the red wines instead favoured the production of rich, concentrated wines. The September rains provided the moisture needed for the development of Botrytis cinerea, responsible for noble rot. The return of sunshine at the end of the month then allowed the grapes to continue concentrating. Harvesting in Sauternes began towards the end of September, and estates able to wait and carry out several selective pickings achieved the best results. Decanter therefore awarded the 1967 vintage its highest rating in its guide for Sauternes and Barsac.

Château d’Yquem 1967 is one of the benchmarks of the year. At the estate, an initial selective picking took place between 26 September and 3 October, before harvesting resumed from 9 October. High temperatures and warm nights then encouraged particularly effective botrytis development. The harvest ended on 26 October with very ripe, concentrated grapes. Other 1967 Sauternes also illustrate the success of the year, including Château Suduiraut, Château Gilette, Château Rabaud-Promis and Château Caillou in Barsac. With age, these wines can develop aromas of honey, candied apricot, orange peel, dried fruit, caramel and spices. Their sugar content, combined with their acidity, has often enabled them to age more successfully over the decades than the red wines from the same vintage.

CHÂTEAU GILETTE Crème de tête 1967

1967 Burgundy Wines

In Burgundy, 1967 followed the 1966 vintage and produced generally lighter wines. A severe frost in early May limited yields. July and August were then very warm, encouraging grape development, before a rainy period lasting around ten days in September. Fine weather returned before the start of the harvest, which was set for 2 October.

Chardonnay coped better with these conditions than Pinot Noir. 1967 white Burgundies were therefore considered more consistent than the reds. Originally, they displayed a rather refined and balanced profile, although today it has become extremely rare to find a bottle still at its optimal drinking stage. Among the red wines, quality was more variable. The most successful examples were characterised more by finesse and elegance than by power.

Volnay is notably cited among the red appellations that achieved interesting results. The great white wine appellations of the Côte de Beaune also provide an important insight into the vintage. At nearly sixty years old, however, the appeal of a 1967 Burgundy now depends primarily on the quality of the producer, the terroir and the bottle’s storage conditions.

The 1967 Vintage in the Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley showed a more favourable profile in 1967, particularly for certain red wines. Results nevertheless differed considerably between the north and south of the region. In Côte-Rôtie, the wines were relatively light and approachable in their youth. By contrast, 1967 Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines stood out for their much more pronounced tannic structure. Their fruit and concentration allowed the best cuvées to withstand long ageing. Decanter therefore considers 1967 a successful year for Rhône reds, awarding the vintage a rating of four out of five. The vintage was also interesting for the white wines of Condrieu.

After several decades of evolution, great Rhône red wines can develop tertiary aromas of leather, spices, dried herbs, mature dark fruit and undergrowth. As with all old vintages, these characteristics remain highly dependent on the individual bottle. A perfectly preserved Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie or 1967 Châteauneuf-du-Pape will not evolve in the same way as a wine that has been exposed to temperature fluctuations or prolonged storage in poor conditions.

1967 Champagnes

The 1967 vintage in Champagne remains much more discreet. The year was not among the vintages widely declared by Champagne houses. Difficult conditions in the vineyards and the presence of grey rot led to a large proportion of the grapes being used in blends rather than vintage cuvées.

Champagnes bearing the 1967 vintage are therefore relatively rare. At this age, their appeal depends heavily on how they have been stored. When a bottle has evolved well, its profile can be very different from that of a young Champagne. Fresh aromas gradually give way to notes of dried fruit, brioche, toast, honey and sometimes undergrowth. For a 1967 Champagne, the condition of the bottle should be examined particularly carefully. The wine level, the condition of the cork and capsule, and the storage conditions provide important indications of how well it may have stood the test of time.

Can You Still Drink a 1967 Wine Today?

A 1967 wine is now approaching sixty years of age. At this stage, it is no longer possible to assess a bottle solely on the basis of the vintage’s overall reputation. Two bottles from the same château and the same year may have evolved very differently.

The wine level in the bottle is a first indicator. The condition of the capsule, the absence of signs of seepage, the colour of the wine and the preservation of the label also provide useful information. Provenance and storage conditions are particularly important for mature vintages. Sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac are among the 1967 wines offering the most promising prospects. Some great red wines from Pomerol, the Rhône or Burgundy can also provide memorable drinking experiences when they have been perfectly stored. Nevertheless, every old bottle should be considered individually.

Before opening, it is generally preferable to leave the bottle standing upright so that any sediment can settle at the bottom. The cork should then be removed carefully, as it may have become fragile after several decades of ageing. For an old red wine, prolonged decanting is not always advisable: too much exposure to air can accelerate its evolution. It is often more interesting to follow the wine’s development directly in the glass.

<div class="wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex
