Located in the northwestern part of the appellation, on the border with Pomerol and immediately neighboring Château Cheval Blanc, the estate was promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2022, recognizing a terroir and a distinctive style that have been championed for more than a century by the Manoncourt family.

A Unique Terroir on Bordeaux’s Right Bank

What sets Château Figeac apart within Bordeaux’s Right Bank is, above all, the nature of its soils. The estate is planted on Günzian gravel, a rare soil type in Saint-Émilion that is more commonly associated with the Left Bank. These gravelly soils extend across three distinct rises—L’Enfer, La Terrasse, and Les Moulins—resting on a deep layer of blue clay that provides the vines with a steady water supply throughout the growing season. This exceptional geological configuration allows the Cabernet varieties to achieve consistent and complete ripeness, a defining characteristic that has earned Château Figeac the nickname “the Médoc of Saint-Émilion.”

The grape composition at Château Figeac directly reflects this distinctive terroir. While Merlot overwhelmingly dominates most Right Bank blends, the estate is planted with approximately one-third Cabernet Sauvignon, one-third Cabernet Franc, and one-third Merlot. Although these proportions vary slightly from one vintage to another, they remain structurally unusual for Saint-Émilion. This balance, maintained in accordance with the vision established by Thierry Manoncourt, gives Figeac’s wines an aromatic and tannic profile that differs markedly from the more Merlot-driven style traditionally associated with the appellation. In this respect, Château Figeac is often compared to some of Bordeaux’s great wines more commonly linked to the Left Bank. The vineyard covers approximately 40 hectares within a total estate of 54 hectares.

Exterior View of Château Figeac

A Parcel-Based Winery Designed for Precision

The inauguration of a new semi-underground winery in 2021 marked a major milestone in the evolution of Château Figeac’s winemaking facilities. Designed to enable parcel-by-parcel vinification, the winery allows grapes from the estate’s three gravel rises—L’Enfer, La Terrasse, and Les Moulins—as well as its three grape varieties, to be vinified separately. This parcel-based approach builds upon the extensive work carried out on Figeac’s unique Günzian gravel terroir, giving the winemaking team a deeper understanding of each individual plot before the final blend is assembled. On Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where the relatively small size of vineyard parcels often makes this level of precision difficult to achieve, the new winery reflects the estate’s commitment to combining respect for terroir with technical excellence, continuing the standards of quality upheld by the Manoncourt family for more than a century.

From Premier Grand Cru Classé B to Premier Grand Cru Classé A

The history of Château Figeac is inseparable from that of the Manoncourt family, who have owned the estate since 1892. Awarded the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the inaugural 1955 Saint-Émilion classification, the estate spent nearly seven decades under this designation, refining the distinctive style and expertise that would become its hallmark. It was during this period that Thierry Manoncourt, who led the property until his passing in 2010, made the bold decision to place the Cabernet varieties at the heart of the blend, defying the prevailing practices of Bordeaux’s Right Bank and laying the foundations for an identity centered on the expression of its exceptional gravel terroir.

Since 2013, Frédéric Faye has continued this vision with the same uncompromising standards, notably through the inauguration in 2021 of a new semi-underground winery designed for more precise parcel-by-parcel vinification. It is this long-term commitment that led to the 2022 revision of the Saint-Émilion classification, when Château Figeac was promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, alongside Château Pavie, following the voluntary withdrawal of Château Angélus, Château Ausone, and Château Cheval Blanc from the classification. Rather than representing a break with the past, this promotion reflects the natural continuation of a path that began with the 1955 classification. It officially recognizes a stylistic consistency and a deep commitment to terroir that had already defined Château Figeac throughout its decades as a Premier Grand Cru Classé B.

CHÂTEAU FIGEAC 1990

92/100 : “This is a magnificent Château Figeac, displaying a deep garnet-ruby color with a slight lightening at the rim. Aged for 18 to 20 months in new French oak barrels, the wines develop additional depth and complexity without allowing the oak to overshadow the fruit or the estate’s distinctive mineral character. This balance results in wines built for long-term cellaring, with the finest vintages capable of evolving gracefully over several decades. The estate’s second wine, Petit-Figeac, formerly marketed as La Grange Neuve de Figeac, offers a more approachable expression of the château’s signature style in its youth while
