Cellar Tracker January - 2022

Light crimson with light rim. Tamarind, dried fruits, tobacco, sweet and fully integrated tannins. And fleeting notes of soy? Medium minus acidity and tannins. Fruit almost no longer present. Pleasantly surprised that this still had something to give. Slow oxed for 24 hours to see how this would develop, but no amount of air was able to give this additional weight. But really not an issue. The notes mentioned above held on for about 6 hours after opening. I got as much as I could have hoped for in this bottle.

Rustic, earthy, medium bodied and short, the wine lacks complexity and depth. Although there is a charm in the earthy red fruits, herbs, leaf and tobacco personality. This is not a wine for further aging. If you are sitting on any drink up.

Information on the vintage 1978 red Bordeaux : The year of the miracle. Appalling growing season. Complete disaster loomed. Then the weather improved with a September blessed with cloudless skies and unbroken ripening sunshine through to the harvest.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it was 1st Grand Cru Classé B since 1954). He shares the head of the Saint Emilion wine classification with Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The vineyard of Château Angelus is located on the foot of coast, a steep hillside facing south. The clay-limestone soil rests on a calcareous base. The grape variety is composed of about 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In some years as in 2003, the share of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! Mature wine 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, the castle Angelus initiates its conversion to Bio which should be completed in 2023.

The greatest vintages of Château Angelus are 1988, the 1989 vintage wines, 1990, 1993, 1994.
