Our opinion on the 1956 vintage: satisfactory wines in the Rhône Valley. In Bordeaux, the year 1956 was marked by terrible frosts, which made it the harshest winter since 1709. The Bordeaux vineyards were completely destroyed, resulting in a very small harvest. This made the red wines of Bordeaux rare and precious. The situation was similar in Burgundy and Champagne, where a terrible frost in February with temperatures reaching -30°C had a considerable impact on the vintage. As a result, the 1956 vintage did not produce great wines in Burgundy or Champagne. On the other hand, in the Rhone Valley, the climatic conditions were rather favorable to the maturation of the grapes. We talk about a quality vintage, with good wines produced in this region.
