The 2015 vintage was remarkable for the whole Bordeaux region, but especially for the right bank. Benefiting from an overall sunny year, with a hot summer and well distributed rainfall, the grapes ripened in optimal conditions, offering wines of great quality and with significant aging potential. Each appellation produced quality wines, with the best vineyards producing low yields but intensely flavored.
In Burgundy, the 2015 vintage was exceptional, with a relatively early but very successful harvest, where most grapes reached optimal ripeness.
The white grapes were picked before the rain arrived, which interrupted the harvest for the red grapes. Despite concerns that the fruit might be overripe, the wines were remarkably intense rather than overripe.
This was one of the best years for the Rhone Valley, where both the north and south had ideal growing seasons. Harvests were phenomenal for both white and red wines, making this a great year. The 2015 Rhone reds are even comparable to the 1990 vintage.
In Champagne, 2015 was a legendary vintage, recording the warmest growing season on record. Although yields were below average, the wines produced were simply stunning. The conditions favored excellent quality pinot noir and chardonnay, offering remarkably balanced wines, rich in intense fruit.
The wines of the Right Bank appellations, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, have received much praise in Bordeaux for their opulent, intense and fruity character. The Left Bank appellations such as Margaux and Graves have produced classic wines, both red and white.
The red wines of Burgundy are well structured, intense and refined with a good concentration of fruit. The whites are also excellent, although slightly less homogeneous, with riper fruit flavors and less acidity than other years.
In the northern Rhône, Syrah was superb with powerful, classic wines from Cornas, Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie. Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage also produced great wines, characterized by complex notes that go well beyond their fruit character.
The 2015 vintage Champagnes are drinking very well now, but the best ones are likely to age and develop even more.
