Contrary to the various Bordeaux rankings that prioritize the Châteaux, in Burgundy it is the terroirs that are evaluated. A Grand Cru represents what the land offers best for the vine. While a Premier Cru combines the name of its climate with that of its village appellation, for a Grand Cru the climate is a name in its own right.
