The combination of richness and perceived quality matched the economic climate. The big guns still have fire power and length of trajectory.» Robert Parker: «Analysis of the 1982s show that they are the most concentrated and the most rich in extraction since 1961. Most [1982 Bordeaux wines] seem to have evolved very little since their time in oak barrels and have now totally recovered from the bottling. They deploy in the mouth extraordinary ample, rich and fat aromas of an exceptional richness that should last at least 10 to 15 years to come.» Rhone Red : 4/5 Michael Broadbent: «Even by Rhone standards, the summer was excessively hot and dry. It was an early harvest, winemakers having to cope with sun-baked grapes, hot fermentation and reduced acidity. It was not an easy time but the more competent producers made very good wine. » Porto : 3/5 Michael Broadbent: «Some good wines drinking well, and seriously undervalued. » Champagne : 4/5 Michael Broadbent: «A highly successful vintage, widely ‘declared’. One of those rare years when the growing conditions were well nigh ideal, resulting in the biggest crop on record and of uniformly high quality. » Red Burgundy : 2/5 Michael Broadbent: «The growing season was good: warm early spring, early flowering, fine summer, hot September, a healthy crop of ripe grapes harvested from the 20th; continuing warm weather into October. So what went wrong? Overproduction or a bumper crop resulting in lack of concentration? » White Burgundy : up to 4/5 Michael Broadbent: «In the beginning it was a ripe and attractive vintage but if not exactly flaccid, the wines had inadequate acidity to provide any zest to life. » |
